Yesterday, Showtime began offering direct subscriptions to its service through Apple TV that no longer require an existing cable or satellite service, the company revealed.
The network's stand-alone streaming service is available on the Apple TV, other TV set-top boxes like the Roku, and iOS devices through the App Store. It's also slightly cheaper than HBO's competing streaming service HBO Now.
Showtime isn’t the first premium network to untether itself from cable. HBO debuted its $15-a-month HBO Now Apple TV channel and iOS app in April, and has reportedly already racked up more than a million subscribers. Now that Showtime is on board, cord-cutters have hope that a la carte will soon become the new norm.
The new channel is available on all black Apple TV units (second and third generation). A free 30-day trial is available before users have to start paying.
